I love this app, my first use I was able to sample a flute and some other found sounds and immediately make music unlike anything I’ve ever created. The tempo detection and auto clip length creation is really nice - it makes tempo completely conform to performance.
The metronome tone is so nice and plush!
The rest of this review is about how I envision the app developing as well as other things I appreciate about the current state of the app (2023-02-27).
There are some glaring limitations. For one, I rarely write music in 4/4, but that is the only option in Ableton (actually it is option-less). I’d like to see some time signature options.
Clip length should be able to be shortened/lengthened by quantized amounts, after a performance is selected as a clip; this relates to time signatures.
Start point of a clip should be user selected (default to the head of clip); I like the ability to choose which bars to playback, but within the bar selecting the starting beat would be nice.
Free time should be selectable, thus allowing for playback while performing.
I like the time nudging, even though it is not as fluid as grabbing and dragging midi notes.
Pitch knife knob needs to have some sensitivity rework, I was not able to dial it to 12 steps because the knob spans +-48 steps.
I am excited to watch this app grow and improve. I also like the idea of it not growing beyond the concept of being a music sketch app. Make it better at what it is aiming to be, try not to let too many extra features in as it grows.
Easy to use, intuitive and quite nice visual aspect, it would seem that it could be better than FLMobile but I consider that there are 3 things that hold back its true potential to be better than FLMobile (which I have and use) and I wish that these recommendations could be heard!.
1. Manual draw notes and visual midi editor: It's really frustrating to have to record and record to get a sound right, it would be easier to just take that sound and drag it to a specific note on the midi piano (all already quantized to our shape). In other words, like in “Live” if we could have a visual midi piano in which we can capture notes just by pressing said note, add loops and that their duration depends on the duration of the note placed on the midi piano, that would be great.
2. Moving the pad rack or midi piano: If we could have the option to move on the midi piano or the pad rack itself to select the 8th we want, that would save us a lot of time! It would also help a lot if we could activate the option to see the labels or name of the notes on the piano or rack (C,D,E, Kick, Snare, Clap, etc...)
3. Add more than one effect or plugin: maybe for performance reasons this is not possible but if it is not, it would be great to have the opportunity to add more than one effect to individual pads and sound kits, like “ I want to add max 5 or 8 effects or effects plugin (reverb, sat, EQ) at the same time in a single sound and also to the sound kit.
I was really excited when this app came out and only wanted support for midi controllers. Seems like other people wanted it too but apparently Ableton is yet another company that ignores its users. Don’t get me wrong, it has a lot of thing things about it, and as an Ableton user I love being able to edit the instruments inside of Ableton but only being able to play note using my IPad screen has become lame. I’m going to delete it for now and will check back in 6 months, maybe it’s have midi support by then, if not I’m definitely done with it
I’m not sure where the negative reviews come from. The limitations in doing something of this scale in iOS are massive. You and your developers are handcuffed immensely and you pulled it off. The latency is Bluetooth related but again here it’s iOS not Ableton. I f-ing love this. Cloud works great. I was waiting for something new and this is really well received by me. It’s Ableton - aka - it looks limited but twiddle and tap for 20 minutes and i can get an idea down before it’s gone. Thanks and keep up the good work!!!!
It’s a bummer that it doesn’t want to play nice with other apps. No output ports or even Inter-App Audio capabilities. You can Ableton link with so many other apps except with its own app.??? Odd choice to have gone rogue. I hope to see more functions added within future updates. Limitations can be good but options are always better. Thank you guys for finally making a really great unique app. It is truly one of a kind and so many great characteristics
This has been a huge help for me to just get a bunch of quick melody ideas down before ever actually committing to writing the whole song. It’s so easy to come up with a 16 bar loop. In a couple seconds, I can flesh out an idea and see if I want to throw it into Ableton on my computer and flesh out the whole song. All I wish is that it was also available for android 🤷♂️
I love the app and can’t wait for upgrades and improvements which hopefully are coming soon.
I would love to be able to make time signature changes and to have more editing features.
It’s an ‘idea’ app that’s meant to push us into the Ableton DAW that I already own and use.
Instead let’s make it fully featured and ABLE TO output completed songs.
Definitely enjoying this app a lot. Really intuitive if you already use Ableton. Fun and inspirational.
A big problem for me right now is not being able to import my own samples. They don’t show up in the app’s Imported folder, even though I see the files in the imported folder on my system. Very puzzling.
Having a great time, but not numerically specifying scene selection removes much of its value. If I had a corner, or pop up, that allowed me to select scenes and repitions, that would greatly enhance exported audio: 1,1,1,3,1,2,2,4,1,5, etc. nice work folks but keep it up 🤩🥳
Honestly for a paid app from a company like Ableton I expected more. It has some cool features but it’s kind of meh. I could not get midi keyboard to work on it which was a huge disappointment. Hopefully it will get more updates in the future.
