Better than nothing

I’m not here to complain about the sophisticated kinds of things many people wish Alexa could do. I use it for very simple things. Set a coffee timer. Remind me to take out trash. Add to shopping list. Control a handful of smart plugs by voice. Try (unsuccessfully) to listen to Apple Music or Spotify. Alexa is constantly “forgetting” (and then can no longer connect to) smart plugs she’s supposed to be compatible with. I can no longer control lights by voice using Alexa; I have to go to whichever brand’s app (Kasa, Wemo, etc.) and manually turn on or off the light. Alexa blames her failure to see these plugs on conditions that don’t exist: “check network connection”, “check power supply”. Nothing wrong with network or power if I’m able to control the light by opening the Kasa app. But that defeats the purpose of Alexa integration and voice control, not to mention I have to memorize which light is on which brand’s plug. She’s more reliable with Amazon brand plugs but they’re significantly more expensive than the others - plus she does also disconnect those once in a while and is unable to find them again, even after endless troubleshooting. It’s a source of frustration almost every day. Integration with Apple Music and Spotify is AWFUL. Commands don’t work, can’t get the album, playlist or radio station I want, and I end up having to use Echo as a Bluetooth speaker. Even that stinks because with Bluetooth you can’t play music through multiple speakers, only one. That defeats the purpose of having multiple Echos in my living space including the Echo subwoofer. Plus I don’t want every sound my phone makes coming through the Echo speaker. There’s a reason why inside the Alexa app skills section the ratings are so low for apps she’s supposed to integrate with. Huge technology fail. I say “Alexa, turn on the living room light” and she says some version of “I can’t because it’s not responding.” I ask again immediately, and the Echo way over in the kitchen responds and successfully turns on my living room light. Vice versa if I’m in the kitchen. (I thought the Echo nearest to you was supposed to be the one to respond?) I could go on for pages, but you get the idea. IMO this whole system is still in beta and not ready for prime time, even after all these years. These devices should be sold at a deep discount (and they should stop all the unsolicited attempts to “suggest” or sell us something) since users are just serving as unpaid product testers.
Agree w “Still to difficult to use” from ‘21!

Alexa could easily make everything intuitive yet it’s extremely frustrating to remember where each setting is found! Currently I’m trying to find where I can name ALEXA to ECHO. I’ve done it before on 5 Alexa’s, but after SECURELY changing my password using the safest way on Amazon it CLEARED EVERY SINGLE SETTING I HAD SETUP IN MY ALEXA Apps! I’m needing to reset up every pod individually. I warn ALL USERS NOT TO USE THIS METHOD IN AMAZON if you own Alexa gadgets! (Yes, I have to start at the beginning and even setup the WiFi 1st.) There should be a SIMPLE way to find the answer for changing the name to Echo from Alexa but I’ve wasted several hrs. now attempting to do so to NO avail. I loved Alexa (except for its simplistic answers) before this. I especially enjoy listening to anything I wish on Amazon Music at such a good rate — if I could only figure out how to make it work in my car! Supposedly, I can use it in the car but finding out how is one more very difficult answer to find instructions and follow. Not to mention receiving a cell signal in the rural 🇺🇸! Come on ALEXA! Listen to your customers & make your settings + features = EASY & INTUITIVE to use! STOP causing customers to not use your many features because we just give up. ?Launching Skills? Honestly❗️No one person caN possibly remember all the Title Names one is supposed to say to launch one. Use simple words, don’t cause any customer to enable a skill for it to work either! MaKe iT aN easY, iNTegraTed, fuNcTioN! MAKE ALEXA CHILD’S PLAY FOR ADULTS, please! 🔜

First, installed Alexa App on a brand new Dell Convertible running Windows 10. This app does not have the ability to add a new device (Echo Dot). This app wants to BE an Echo Show in the worst way. All I want to do is set up a dot. If I had known this app was crippled and unable to add a device I never would have installed it. Google tells me to use Alexa app on my phone!!! On my phone, going through the setup on a brand new Echo Dot (11/30/2022). Get wifi connected, and placement set to Dining Room. Try to set the location to the address of the house and choose a custom name for this address (I have more than one address) and receive a red error bar at the top of the screen: “There was an error while saving location”. YOU WOULD THINK AMAZON WOULD HAVE THIS STUFF FIGURED OUT BY NOW!! So now I will not be able to say “Alexa, order thousands of $$$ worth of stuff for <insert location name here>”. I guess I’ll just keep using other vendors…
Coordination w Amazon music has fallen apart
lisserbiscuit on 2022-12-04
I loved this app for the way it used to work…being able to ask for a style of music or artist and have a couple hours of music that made sense without having to think about it, was really nice…now the staying on requested genre or style seems totally broken…asking for the same type of music more than once seems to only access the same narrow playlist every time now, and it used to mix it up pretty well…instrumental orchestra hymns are not kids Christmas music. one song by the requested artist followed by a dozen songs by seemingly unrelated artists is not how this used to work…come on amazon, go back to the old way. Also my purchased music library seems unreachable w Alexa now…stuff I own shouldn’t have to shuffle…Alexa used to understand when I asked for my library songs automatically…I don’t want to give up on this app, but it has gone downhill in a hurry
Getting worse not better

Most people buy these devices to control their other smart home devices and get information. It was recently announced that Alexa is losing Amazon tons of money because their business model was for people to purchase things with the device. Because of this they seem to be turning on those features, that you had previously turned off, every time they push out an update. If you enjoy turning these things repeatedly and being hounded with suggestions, Alexa is your device. Alexa used to be a cool device for information and controlling smart devices. Sadly Amazon’s greed wasn’t content creating such a device, so they are turning Alexa into an annoying cheap used car salesman that you purchase to annoy you. If the stories about how much Amazon is losing on these devices are true, I would not purchase one because I don’t think they are long for this world.
$150 Paperweights

Bought the Echo and the Dot for my home. Paid the full retail price ($150) for them, hurts a lot now that I see I could've gotten them for half that. Set up was a little cumbersome. Audio is pretty great on the full size Echo. That’s about where the good stops. These things are constantly going offline (yes they are updated) and the Dot is randomly going on mute in the middle of the night without anyone touching it, or they both just randomly lose internet connection. Can’t really do much with them anymore. Issues started about 3 months after I bought them and now they are almost unusable. Guess I’ll have to grab a device from Apple. For a multi-billion dollar company that prides themselves on innovation, you would think that their product would last longer and better than 3 months 🤦‍♂️
Terrible app - doesn’t work with iOS 16
sMyNickname on 2022-12-04
Logged out. Reinstalled app. Still issue. Always asks who I am every time I open app. Can never finish setup. Devices screen just loads and loads. No devices show. Communicate button doesn’t work and asks me who I am every single time. This app has turned to complete garbage. Doesn’t work with iOS 16 on any of my devices. It works fine with ios15. Cannot access devices or setup communications page. Won’t even say my name. It freezes up and does nothing. Updated 11-17-22. As of 12- 2–22 the app functions at about 80%. Still doesn’t fully work. Also, if you have ring cameras and set any announcements on via the Alexa app, it will never play your chime through the Alexa devices. If you turn announcements off the chime plays through the Alexa devices without any issue. Just another bug.
My favorite list
xrobertxcustomerxpissed on 2022-12-04
I was happier with the previous version of favorite lists. I made and liked the shuffle format I had. Now that has been changed, my playlist “favorites” now is not under my control. When I ask for my favorites to be played I am told “shuffling your playlist and similar songs “. I can only skip six tracks and I am locked out for an hour. This is not appreciated and is quite annoying. I make my playlists for my favorite track and do not want similar songs. I gave three stars reluctantly. I was planning on dropping my Sirius subscription and using Alexa, but if I can’t control what I want to listen to, then I’ll have to rethink it. I’ll end this a disappointed user.
Alexa app and Apple Music
Have no nme on 2022-12-04
I use a Firestick for TV and read several articles on “successfully” using the Alexa app to stream my Apple Music as there is no Apple Music Icon in Amazon. Installed the Alexa app, linked everything on my iphone 11 which supports my Apple Music subscription……It DOES NOT work!!! It will repeat the same message every time telling me that I must have an Apple Music subscription and then it tries to play Amazon music or a radio station subscription of which I have neither!! Do not waste time or money on this app or method to stream Apple music!!

You guys are seriously going to play an ad that mentions a podcast with dead bodies and cocaine while the kids and I are listening to Christian praise music? Incredibly disappointed. Is this how you guys operate your company? Is this the impression you are ok with leaving on children? Disgusting. Absolutely love it when alexa switches from “white noise for four hours” to music blasting and waking up the baby. I’m done with Amazon and Alexa. Ridiculous.
