Several issues with the ads
I’m watching a Freevee program currently so I don’t know if these issues exist specifically with Freevee content, but it is so problematic that I felt I had to write a review.
1. Not displaying the length of the total ad time during every ad break; they are sporadic. Prime used to be very good about this, idk what happened.
2. Not allowing me to use picture-in-picture when the ad is playing, forcing me to stay on screen while the ad is playing, or closing out the program all together if I don’t go back to the app to let the ad play after a period of time.
3. Clunky transition into an ad, right between words, or in the middle of an important revelation. Usually ads happen at the end of sentences or during a scene change but these ads are intrusive, and severely affect the viewing experience. (In the past I believe there used to be a timer that told you that the ad was incoming and would gracefully transition into an ad but slowly bringing down the sound and a fade to black to allows the ad to come in, and go out. That was amazing. If it wasn’t this service, please implement that!)
4. If I go BACK to hear or see something again, it triggers an ad, regardless of if I use the 15 sec playback button, or if I scrub the content. It doesn’t even have to be where an ad is shown to be, it will just trigger an ad, and then force you to watch another ad if there’s one lined up, even if it’s only 10-15 secs away.
I’ve been waiting since 2015 for amazon to update their UI. How do they think ‘rewind’ and ‘forward’ from 1980s are still the way to scroll in 2023?!?! Like fr. OMG. You can’t just select where you want a video to play. You have rewind it at 3x until you reach it. If you want to go back 40sec, You can’t press 10sec rewind multiple times. You have to wait until the rewind operation completes and then press 10sec rewind again for 3 more times. Like what the actual f. Its 2023 bro! If you have lg tv or apple tv, forget the pointer scroll, YOU HAVE TO USE AMAZONS ANTIQUATED SCROLL FUNCTION.
The app has an xray function to tell the cast’s bio, but you can’t select the bio from the movie page. Only from inside the movie at a specific scene
HDR is a mess in different brand tvs. I had a samsung, and the local samsung app had much better quality than apple tv.
The UI itself is clunky and garbage. I’m an employee and convinced amazon extracts the most mediocre devs and designers talent because of ‘frugality’ leadership principle in the industry. Doesn’t know where to NOT cut corners. How the app has above 4 stars is beyond me. Ppl need to rate the app, not the content. End of rant.
As another commenter noted a couple of days ago, AirPlay has stopped working properly since last update. Overall this is the app I use most to watch TV/movies because of preferring the interface and really enjoying the X-ray feature of trivia and cast info when available. However, overnight, I stopped being able to stream my audio through to my wifi external speakers via AirPlay. Or rather, i can do so but without seeing the video. I am able to through my one speaker using it in Bluetooth mode but otherwise i get a black screen and sound. Or I can watch the video with just the regular iPad sound, but I prefer the better and louder quality of my Sonos system and I often stream it through my house as I’m moving room to room. Oddly, I can have the full AirPlay sound AND video if I minimize the video to use screen-in-screen but it won’t go back to the full screen with audio AND video when I remaximize it. PLEASE FIX ASAP. This is beyond frustrating and I was about to factory reset my iPad because I thought my machine was the problem until I played with every other app repeatedly and then saw that other review describing the same problem.
Great movie service not app. The audio blasts at full level 11+ plus and you have to wait to actually turn it down when the app responds after half your neighborhood knows what you’re watching. Geniuses that developed the UI obviously don’t beta test it and live in a basement somewhere in China playing video games. Very cumbersome and as intuitive as the mess of wires behind your home theater system. But it has a Dolby on button and “more” info ℹ️ on it. CASTING TO TV IS A NIGHMARE you have to hit some hidden button on the bottom right to control anything other than stop 🛑 before the neighbors call the cops in for a “domestic disturbance” also the portrats lock is all over the place you have to keep switching back between landscape and portrait CONSTANTLY to access the play back controls. Morons I’ve seen more intuitive interfaces on a nuclear submarine. You obviously don’t beta test your UIs in any form in the real world if you made underwear it would probably be made to have “Two Good Sides” 👍🏻 Amazon ! smiley face 😊
I used to be pretty happy with Amazon and Freevee. I did always hate how they don’t give a warning when they plan to drop something. But recently the commercials have gotten completely out of control. To the point that I’m ready to stop watching. It used to be that you watch an hour show, there might be 3 commercial breaks and they’d be 30-45 seconds total. Suddenly, the same show has 6 breaks and they last a minute and a half or more. Even worse, if you’re watching Picture in Picture, they force to the stop and watch all the commercials on a full screen. It’s impossible. There’s so many free competitors these days that are nowhere near this annoying. If I pay a high fee to a disgustingly huge, multibillion dollar company, I DON’T WANT COMMERCIALS.
The non-standard player with horribly slow scrubbing and weird fast-forward implementation is just god awful. So painful to navigate or even play/pause a video. The interface is such a mess for navigation as well. There are weird areas where you navigate and the selection you’re hovering on expands for some reason and it interrupts quick browsing of the library. Also, the graphics are over-compressed and look bad. I don’t get why this is so hard for Amazon. Every version of prime video I’ve ever used hasn’t been good and this latest rev tries but it may be worse than what it replaced. Keep trying, Amazon.
Prime is notorious for their bait & switch tactics on what constitutes a free movie versus what requires a purchase. But now they’re just flat out lying. They advertised “Everything Everywhere All At Once” as available to watch “with a subscription, RENT or buy”. But when you click on the link you can only buy or subscribe (to Showtime). I even called customer service, and the agent apologized, but told me there was “nothing we can do about it!” Zero accountability. She tried to blame it on Showtime. She suggested that I “file a complaint”… 😅😅🤯. They don’t even pretend to care anymore.
the app version 9.290.13 running on a MacBook Pro running OS 12.6.2 hangs roughly 95% of the time it is used. The app may open ok but when one tries to do anything, it hangs. Or, one can stream a video, exit the video and then try to browse or stream another video and the app will hang. After the app hangs, it usually will not open upon trying to restart it (i.e. it hangs immediately) and then one has to kill the app and restart it again. Only upon this second restart will the app function properly for a while (until another hang event occurs that is). Very annoying and unacceptable.
Every movie I wanted to watch either had commercials attached to it or it was for rent or buy. I really wanted to watch Spartacus Blood and Sand again. I was allowed to watch first episode but then I had to pay to rent it or buy it for download. I give three stars because it was easy to cancel, I got to watch one episode of Spartacus and Prime let me try it for free. For me it’s not worth the money for a subscription and then not be able to watch anything I liked if I wasn’t interested in paying more for it OR have to watch commercials paying a subscription.
Nothing is more annoying than an app that doesn’t work properly, I can’t even make purchases properly without going through a process to do so. You guys have made it an effort to do the simplistic of things like casting to a tv, playing audio, and not being able to buy seasons properly without going through another process. Why can’t I just search select and purchase then cast on the tv? Why does it have to be such an effort for it to still fail me and be stuck loading on casting with no other option available. This app comes off very lazy
