Functionality is awful
Absolut XM on 2021-01-21
I’d give it a -5 stars if I could. The app would be fine if they would fix the glitches. The app doesn’t cast correctly, ever! You’ll have to redo the cast 6-10 times before you get 5 minutes of game and then it freezes. The app makes you sign into your tv provider constantly I’ve never tried to watch a game that I didn’t have to sign in 5 times, app crash twice and then it tells me there was some error that means I have to restart whatever device I’m on. I once had to sign in three times in 45 seconds. The streaming jumps. You can close and reload the app and it will work until the next time you turn the volume down for some reason. Don’t try to switch between games, oh no, you’ll be stuck in buffer land for 30 minutes. Fix the bugs and the app will be great. Keep it this way and I’ll stream the games off some other service.
Would give zero stars

THE WORST APP OF ALL TIME! How is it even possible for such a HUGE company to have the worst streaming platform ever. Figure it out, please. I have incredible internet speed and your fire tv app does nothing but buffer. It will play for 2 minutes, then buffer. Over, and over, and over. It’s maddening. The Apple app is terrible too. I click on a stream to play and nothing happens. Just a little circle appears and then disappears and nothing happens. I have to close out of the app and restart it 5 times before it ever decides it wants to actually play something. I HATE THIS APP WITH THE FIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS! You can stream Netflix with dial up internet, but you can’t successfully stream espn app on fire tv with 500 Mbps. Hey espn, ask Netflix what they are doing because you don’t have a clue.
Dead links all the time
Jay Street on 2021-01-21
I’m not sure why, but I’d say more than 70% of the time when I click on something the app will spin and then do nothing. Also when I get ESPN notifications about breaking news I’ll click on it expecting to be taken to the story that I got the alert for, but instead I get taken to the main page and can’t ever find the story that I thought I was being taken to. It’s made the app worthless to me because I don’t want to deal with the frustration so I just don’t click on alerts or really use the app anymore. The reason why I even wrote this was because I got an alert about UFC and wanted to see what had happened. Right on queue I didn’t get taken to the story but I was able find it and tried to play it but just spins and then does nothing.
Bye bye
Tr08971 on 2021-01-21
Bye bye ESPN. I will not miss you. Of course everybody is entitled to their own opinions and rightly so but your networks continued play into politics is over the top. It’s essentially an effort to brain wash the viewers and make enemies out of people who view politics and current events differently than you do. Enough with the name calling. I will not list the names in an effort to not be censored but we all know the names. They end in “ist” and “phobic”. I’ve finally had enough.Sports is supposed to be something that unites us but your networks 24hr a day coverage of controversial political topics continues to divide. I’m deleting my app and canceling ESPN+.
How does Disney allow this !?!
SportsFansNeedBetter on 2021-01-21
I was ecstatic to learn of the coupling of ESPN+ with Disney+... but considering you basically can’t use ESPN+ because this app is so terrible and not that many Smart TVs have it native. Of course that’s even assuming that SmartTV version of the app is functional, which is a big assumption. How the he77 in 2020, in the world of cord cutting and uncertainty/change in the sports TV package can the purported “leader” have such a terrible streaming app ?! I literally WANT to pay you for ESPN+ (we had it even before buying disney+), but may have to cancel the whole Disney shebang because this App is such an insult to paying customers.
Absolutely atrocious
yak613_ on 2021-01-21
The app is packed with bugs that make it almost unusable. If I know a game is going to start at 3 PM, I will have to start trying to play it at 2:30 or I’ll spend the first 20 minutes or so trying to get the game to load. Every time I try to play a game, I get a loading spinner that sits there for about 20 seconds and then goes away. Every time. If I reopen the app, after a few more times it might play. Even after that, the app messes with the audio on my phone so nothing else will play correctly while the app is open in the background. The only reason I even have this app is because I get ESPN+ free with my phone plan.
Horrible Streaming
Chrisshur on 2021-01-21
ESPN is the worst streaming app of all time for the power and money they have. Watching on your phone is decent with WiFi or data, but if you watch on your PS4, TV, or laptop it is UNBEARABLE. The video quality is choppy and heavily pixelated: it jumps around and pauses literally every 5 seconds. You can’t watch a quarter or even multiple possessions without being interrupted. I normally just turn it off and watch something else. If you want to watch some State Farm commercials or ads then this is the perfect app for you because they seem to play those perfectly with great quality and uninterrupted
Streaming is horrible
Hitler333 on 2021-01-21
This is the worst app for streaming available. I can’t stress enough how bad it is. So many times I’ll be watching a game and it randomly pauses, it is not my WiFi - I’ve checked. Even if I’m so lucky to be able to watch a game in peace, the picture is blurry. Seriously horrible connections and apparently it randomly forgets my cable info so I have to sign back in? When I try, it doesn’t always work. I really wish I could say it’s user error because that would make my life a lot easier. But it’s not. It’s ESPN’s error. Seriously pathetic excuse for streaming live sports.
Download a different app for game scores
PFrosty38 on 2021-01-21
It’s sad this app is so bad now because that it used to work really well. They had quality articles and all the game scores/stats you need. It loaded quickly and was easy to use. They’ve transitioned to only having video clips with no articles because they fired all the writers. The videos are slow to load and often have issues. Even if they load most are of some talking head yelling their stupid take meant to attract clicks. I downloaded another sports app to check game scores and it is immediately better.
All name, no merit
B-Mac12 on 2021-01-21
The worldwide leader in sports needs to make some serious investments in their app. Got a notification to check out a cool highlight? Yea, that won’t work. How about I take you to a black home screen in perpetuity. Looking for a particular score? Enter search purgatory as you uncover every last rock to find it. On the off chance you’ve managed to find a story to read, enjoy how the embedded videos don’t work, no matter how many times you click. Oh that there was a decent alternative....
