This app is very useful and has helped me complete many assignments distraction free. I would definitely recommend it to students that feel they are constantly distracted by their phone. It is very satisfying to unlock new tree types and watch your forest become larger and more unique. However, I do have two complaints about this app. My first complaint is that this app $3.99. I think that it is worth the price if you continuously use the app, but nobody wants to spend $3.99 on the App Store. Many people probably scroll past this app after seeing the price alone because most apps that are popular are free, such as Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, etc. My only other gripe with this app is the ability to turn off the feature called deep focus. Deep focus is the feature that causes your tree to wither when you leave the app. If you disable deep focus, you are still able to do all of the distracting things that a phone has to offer while still growing your tree. In my opinion, I believe that you should not be allowed to disable the deep focus feature and that your tree should always wither when you exit the app. I find it contradictory that the ability to disable deep focus even exists since in the description of your app it states, “A interesting way to help you beat phone addiction and overcome distraction” (SEEKRTECH CO., LTD). If you can just disable the setting that punishes you for using your phone while growing the tree, then how is it helping you focus?
Overall, if you use this app correctly and have enough self-discipline as to not turn off the deep focus setting, then it is extremely useful for reducing the amount of time spent consuming media.
It’s a huge plus that there’s a humanitarian and ecologically motivating factor for diving into productivity. I’ve perpetually avoided school work (among many other less than desirable responsibilities) for years and I’ve tried countless things to help keep me on track and focused. Along with other self-care tips like creating a relaxing setting for studying, proper breathing, getting up and moving, meditation, vitamins and eating/sleeping right This app is the icing on the cake. I can bring a more creative/optimistic outlook on studying.
Also, for student that don’t know what the Pomodoro technique is - it really works!! If you’re a student and haven’t tried to, give it a shot. The technique is setting a timer for 25 minuets studying/reading/working & 5 minuets off. Personally I found that taking two 5 minuet breaks every two sessions and then one 15 minuet break after the third round is my sweet spot. There’s plenty of research to back up the technique if you’re interested in it :)
For App Developers:
Please bring this app to full timer control/functionality on the Apple Watch!! A lot of students are looking to completely get away from their phones while studying (at least I am). Other than that amazing job on the app, will be by go-to every time I need to crack down on some productivity :)
I absolutely love this app! The game aspect of it offers consistent rewards for your commitment to set your phone down. There are so many fun flowers, bushes, trees, and odd plants to plant in your garden! Plus you get to plant REAL TREES! I’m in love with the concept of planting real trees in favor of more time connected to nature and each other. 🌳❤️ I’ve used it for years to keep myself off of my phone and stop myself from doom scrolling! I had a terrible habit of this, but this app has been a HUGE help to slowing this habit! 5/5 - I always recommend to my friends and family! To developers: I wish I was able to start and stop a timer from my Apple Watch! It would help to keep myself off of my phone for even longer during the day while planting trees!
This has happened to me a couple times and it’s so very frustrating. For example, today I set a 30minute timer to do homework/study and I’ll ignore the notification and keep it running until I’m ready to stop. I then go back to the app and it says that my “overtime” is only like 3-4 minutes when in my notification center it’ll read as 36 mins since the timer has stopped (tree has grown). It’s so very annoying and a little bit discouraging bc I would like an accurate read on my study timer.
The next critique is that the app itself is kind of clunky. When I click on something it will take a bit to process my request. I have updated just now and it is the same and not very smooth at all.
I’m a grown woman and have no idea why watching a virtual tree grow helps my productivity and focus, but it does!
Having the timer with a visual aid that allows me to see my progress helps me stay focused and motivated while working on projects and study sessions.
I also really appreciate the reminder to take breaks and enjoy having the option to play ambient sounds in the app as well.
As someone with ADHD tools like this seem to help me a lot with focus. Watching my trees grow and collecting coins for new ones is strangely motivating as well.
I think it’s a great app for students, adhd’ers, and anyone who could use a little help/motivation with focus.
balancing college and work before this app made it difficult to keep my grades up in certain classes due to failure of being able to manage my time. however, thanks to this app, i feel like i can juggle college and work while still being able to give myself free time. i really love the option to swap between a timer and stopwatch, which both have limitations so you don’t overwork yourself! with the breaks and timed studies, i was able to finish my rough draft within a day before it was due! i feel like i can handle all aspects of my life now. this app is definitely worth the $3 and is such a life saver for anyone struggling with managing their time better :)
This app has a weak and short notification ring when your focus time is up. The ring is probably half a second long. If you’re listening to music then you could easily miss the 25 minute mark. So you have to keep going back to your phone to make sure your time is not up, defeating the purpose of focus. It has forest background noise you can turn on, but it’s terrible. There’s an option to leave your phone screen on but it’s at the cost of draining your battery. I expect more for a paid app.
This app is super helpful in helping me manage my phone screen time. I used to struggle a lot with using my phone -- at one point it was recorded that I used my phone for 12 hours! Obviously this wasn't the only thing I did to curb my phone addiction, but a very helpful assistant indeed. The trees are also very pretty and have a lot of variety, so you're more motivated to keep them alive. I still don't know how the friends and global ranking work tho.
I enjoy using the app to break up my time into sections for study, work, rest, and even entertainment at times. The only downside to it all is that there is an in-game currency market involved. I paid for the app so that I don’t have to spend a cent more on this app. The fact that you can curb the game of the app just to get better looking flora seems counter-intuitive. Just use the app as it was intended to and not as some free Battle Royale game.
As I started college I have had a constant struggle staying focused. I would always use my phone rather than utilizing my off time. This app has helped me tremendously, love having something to work towards as I study.
That fact that the tree dies when you get out of the app is a great way to redirect the brain to your studies.
Not only is it a good timer but you can save up in-game coins to plant REAL TREES!!! A superb app for students.
