REM sleep data being interpreted by Apple Health as awake time, throwing off Health’s aggregate sleep hours tracking.
Fixed: Sleep data to Apple Health mapping had gotten scrambled when REM calculations were introduced. Representative sleep times are back.
Still chasing down the source of varying HR broadcast instability; hypothesis is third-party watch faces which have HR display on them interfere with the broadcast mode.
Uprating a couple stars... After a delete-all-the-things and set-up-as-new process (and probably some OTA updates to my Vivoactive3) most features are working and bluetooth connection issues resolved.
HR broadcast to an Edge520 still has severely unstable data, but onboard hr+gps recording is stable and accurate.
Sleep data still not very manageable, but at least the data going into Apple Health is no longer gibberish.
Weight tracking is back.
HR broadcast seems fixed, but HR data itself is bonkers; I go from 175bpm avg to 80 for a while in the middle of a sustained hour-long climb? Nope, that’s not right at all.
Weight logging and display still broken and missing.
New bug: bluetooth connectivity fails frequently (~30 minutes), requiring a reboot of the phone to reconnect. Come on guys...
tldr; I really want Garmin to win with the VA3, but sleep tracking, logging, and data management is broken or non-existent. Dysfunctional HR broadcast between VA3 and Edge recently fixed, ish, but HR data issues continue. Weight logging in GC newly broken, as is bluetooth connection.
Sleep tracking is barely functioning at best. Aggregate sleep quality and other metrics (say, for tracking fatigue while fitness training) are completely useless. Between the app and the watch, Garmin doesn’t pick up that I had a bad night of sleep and was up for a couple hours before eventually falling back asleep. Rather than representing my exhausted state from a 5ish hour broken sleep, Garmin thinks I had a full 8+ hours.
Further there’s no way to manage or manually add sleeps. Yea, I can hack a sleep or wake time on an existing record, but that’s only part of a solution. Went back to sleep later and want to put that in manually? Nope. Took some naps? Nope. No way to capture any of that. The data synced to Apple Health is nonsensical and useless.
At this point I’d say if sleep tracking is important, stay away from Garmin (I’m coming from over four+ years of using Fitbit products, their sleep tracking is pretty dialed).
Major issues with HR broadcast to an Edge head unit were fixed with a recent update to the VA3, but new things got broken instead: entering new weight data doesn’t do anything at all. The weather widget continues to indicate “Weather data not available” unless you’ve already looked at the weather on your phone. Bluetooth pairing is fragile, and HR data during activity can vary wildly from reality.
Update 11/23/20: They fixed Apple Health sync, but it’s only putting the most recent 30 days back in. I’ve lost a year and a half of weight data, along with all of the activities tracking from my Fenix 5x and later 6x. This might be a dealbreaker. 6x could be on eBay soon.
Update 11/20/20: Garmin has broken the app once again. As of the most recent update a week or two ago, all data has been wiped out of apple health, although it’s still in Connect. Fingers crossed that it comes back once they fix the app. If not, I’ll be replacing my Garmin scale. 3 stars for lack of QA testing.
Update 3/14/20: Everything has been working well since that initial mess. I’ll now say this is a 4 star app. I’m happy with it and my Fenix.

This app is fine when it works, but the most recent update broke the smart functionality.
The sleep tracking on this app does not work. It leaves large holes sometimes an hour or long throughout the night. Instead of show the sleep stage there is nothing. And that nothing is subtracted from your total sleep time. If I sleep 8 hrs and there is a 2 he hole, the app only counts me as sleeping for 6. I contacted customer service about this multiple times. They are terrible and you don’t get a response for weeks. They told me over a year ago this would be fixed but it wasn’t a hot priority at the time. It still has not been fixed. This feature is one that sets their watches apart from others but it does not work. You can’t edit the holes to show you were sleeping. I really want to track my sleep but I can’t because it’s never accurate. This is so disappointing and the lack of help from Garmin is even more disappointing.
I have an Apple iPhone and have the Garmin Forerunner 735XT watch. Two days ago the app was down for a server issue but I think there are still issues, just no message indicating as such. My “synced” step count is the only thing being displayed but it’s my numbers from two days ago, not current. No other information will display on the app. And, my watch battery drains is about 1 day when it used to last about 1 week. The watch is slow to respond to anything, taking about 5 seconds where it used to be near immediate response to button pushes. I’ve done all the troubleshooting suggested on the website. I think it’s a server issue and the attempts to sync are draining the battery. Please address.
At the last update the app no longer allows the app YAZIO to partner to Garmin Connect. Which means my burned calories are no longer shared to my calorie counting app. See the problem? This interferes with my fitness and goals. I would use another app but I find YAZIO the most accurate and I pay a subscription so I would prefer to continue use. Unfortunately when I sync the two apps through Apple Health it only transfers a fraction of my steps/calories burned because Apple calculates it differently than Garmin. In my opinion Apple calculates it incorrectly that’s why I chose Garmin watch not Apple Watch. But I can’t continue use of any of the apps at hand unless Garmin can cooperate with them.
I am had up up with Garmin siloing the app so that it doesn’t read any data like steps, weights or workout done on other devices but Garmins.
Fine. After all the main repository of my data is Apple Health not Connect. Connect is t necessary in between app.
But when the latest update to Connect not only stops sending data to Health but instead DELETES all data ever collected via Connect that I won’t put up with.
Scale data gone, watch data gone, Edge data gone.
And Garmin just take it sweet time do not acknowledge any problem and leave the app as it is.

I’ve had my Garmin watch for a few years and I’ve been generally happy with it. Overall my biggest complaint was it almost never synced steps from the last 15 minutes of a day, which sucked when pushing to make a goal.
But now that would be a joy. This week for the second time this year the Garmin app has deleted all my steps tracked by the watch for the year. All gone. I was at almost 13k steps
Per day for the year, now I’m at half that.
Thanks Garmin another epic fail that has wiped out any good will I once had.
I haven’t had any problems with the Garman app over the years. I’ve been happy with it and with my Fenix 5.
Suddenly connect has stopped writing data to the Health app. Workouts don’t show up; steps don’t show up. The problem started with the latest update to the app. Right after that Connect stopped writing data to the Health app.
This is a significant concern for me because the Health app delivers data from Connect to other apps I use, such as the Oura ring. Not happy. This is a dealbreaker for me with Garmin.
I have a Vivi active 3. I set the watch face and customize it and all of a sudden I see a new one and the previous one is not available.
I use the meditation app and all of a sudden it doesn’t work, then few weeks later it starts working.
In the previous update the notifications would disappear after some time and at the new update they’ll stay forever until you clear them.
So you’d never know what you gonna miss with the new update and can’t rely on the app.
It is so annoying.
Since the last update (22.214.171.124) Garmin connect mobile constantly deletes the Steps and Distance count from Apple health.
Deleted the app, deleted all data ( :-( ) in health, changed health settings... no luck. After initial re-install of GC all data is back ( well, the last two weeks ) but after sone hours Steps and Distance are completely deleted. All other stats from GC to health are still good...
