Do Not automatically log into a google account unless I ask
Jamelyn on 2023-01-29
Lately, the Gmail app has has taken it upon itself to log into all my Google email accounts even though I never asked it to do that. That means my professional and personal emails are mixed into one hard to manage mess. It takes time out of my work day to sort through this mess of all my email accounts mixed together. It’s quite inefficient. I’ve used this app for years and had these email accounts for years and this is a new problem cause by Gmail app updates. I have paid for a professional Google Suite for years and kept my emails organized in the Gmail app; I also do work for an organization which also uses Google Suite email. I have also had a personal Gmail email account forever. I use different apps to log onto each email account so my emails stay organized and my professional email is not swamped with news updates, personal messages and promotional junk. In the last 2 months or so, the Gmail app has started automatically logging into all these accounts. It’s extremely annoying. There is no clear way to log out of unwanted accounts in the iPhone app. The app does provide this feature on my iPad Pro but not the iPhone version. STOP DOING TOO MUCH!! Give us warning of new “features” and give us the option to opt out - especially from features which take control away from the user. Google and Apple need to learn that one size does NOT fit all. I’m deleting the Gmail app and have to find another app that will give me back control over my G-Suite professional emails. I’ll check back to see if you fixed this. It’s very annoying.
Why are the obvious things so difficult?

My work life has me constantly on the move, and to cut down on space and weight, I often find myself working off of a tablet. From my desktop I am able to send emails to groups I have created in Google Contacts which is a quick and easy way to communicate with my various teams. However, this is not an available option through the gmail app. If I want to email everyone on “Project A” for example, I must type in all of their emails separately. There is no other way to do it. Meanwhile on desktop I can simply begin to type the group name and POOF! There it is. Why this is not standard through the Gmail app is beyond frustrating to me. Seems like it would be simple ask. Google, your apps should speak to one another without causing me to pull out my hair. There are tens of thousands of posts asking for this online. What’s the hold up?
There is a problem

Ok firstly I love this app it’s great it helped me stay connected to many of my friends during the pandemic and helped me get my work done, the design is also quite easy and simple to use and in my opinion this app can’t be replaced but I recently found one issue which is about adding another account. So I forgot the password to one of my accounts and wanted to add it on my iPad. Obviously I got the verification code but here is the thing I only had my iPad and my recovery mail was the one I was using so when I got the code I had no way of seeing it to recover my account which was indeed quite frustrating so if there is anyway to see your mails while adding another account that would be quite helpful. But overall this app is the best and I will continue to useing it.
Jan 12th, 2023 Update BUGGY
MikeDoc1024727 on 2023-01-29
The most recent app update on 1/12/2023 kills the app EACH time the app is pushed to the background. For instance, if I open a specific email inside the Gmail app and then go to any other app to do something for a moment or two, the app resets as if it’s opening from scratch and shows the inbox. I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled the app 3 times and same behavior continues. Never had any issues until this latest update. Please fix ASAP as this is pushing me to use the Apple Mail app instead just to avoid this issue. 1/23 Update: New software update on iOS and issue above is still there. Pretty fundamental stuff and isn’t fixed by a re-install of the app or logging out/in. For paying Google One users, this is a serious bummer. Fix!
The new version (01/19/2023) has a very annoying bug
HonestRatee on 2023-01-29
When you move away from Gmail and come back to it, it frequently restarts the app and opens emails list so you lose your place on the email that you were reading. This is a new bad behavior. It used to behave correctly before. Also, support for text font sizes is missing. This is such a big deficiency that I decided to switch to Apple Mail. In the latest version, the notification badge doesn’t work correctly in power saving mode and doesn’t show the number of new emails. This is definitely a recent bug because Gmail used to work fine before and there are several other apps that badges correctly work in power saving mode.
App Reloads When Switching Between Different Apps, Makes Gmail Unusable
lilgreenfish on 2023-01-29
The app has become unusable with the latest update. If I switch apps, I expect to come back to where I left off. Instead, I am back at the inbox. If I’m in the middle of something, that is unacceptable. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, with the same behavior. This needs to be fixed. I’ve essentially stopped reading my email due to this. I check for important things, then I’m done. Less data for Google, which is not likely the intended result… (Update: they’re not actually reading reviews…I did uninstall and reinstall the app and said it doesn’t help…not surprising but frustrating.)
Great App Again!

Some Missteps
Pikurusu on 2023-01-29
The first being the inability to change the app-level theme from Dark to Light. They took away this feature a year or so ago, and it greatly degrades the app. They also recently added up to three ads on the Promotions screen. But when the third ad (one to two up top and another a few emails down as an interstitial) is visible, swiping to delete or archive a message results in a misfire animation. Only clearing the third ad fixes the animations for this clearing behavior. Two fixes that should be priority but continue to be overlooked update after update.
I love Gmail but this is APP CRAPP.
davidbuckley on 2023-01-29
When I click on primary, I want to see primary, only, not primarily. I don't want to see social, I don't want to see forums, and I definitely don't want to see promotions. And now you have removed the ability to swipe them away! I also don't want images to open automatically, I want to choose and generally I'd like you to think of your users and not just their money. And now you changed the font...harder, not easier to read. Update…now there are in-line ads with a cute little “ad” on them right in FRONT of my primary mail. Zero stars.
