So I replied to an ad on Craigslist for a concert ticket. The seller asked me to pay by Venmo. Being a trusting soul, I agreed. This was the third time I'd ever used Venmo; this sort of payment mode is just not something I do very often. So upon payment, the seller asked for additional fees not stated in the Craigslist ad. I refused to pay without some assurance that the seller refused to provide. So I was scammed.
I wrote the story to Venmo and their reply was:
“…When you tag a payment to a personal profile as a purchase, your payments for eligible items will be covered by Purchase Protection, and you can contact us afterward if something goes wrong.
How to avoid this scam:
• Only buy things from strangers on Venmo if you’re purchasing from a Venmo approved business account or if you mark the payment to a personal profile as a purchase.”
Maybe I missed something, but I would think that this sort of warning ought to appear front and center on the Venmo app before every purchase. I just now looked at my Venmo account. The Venmo|Pay & Request page asks for the amount I wish to pay, to whom, and a place for a note. There is no mention, no warning that one should indicate whether “this is for a purchase” and I cannot see a place to make such an indication should I be aware that this should be done.
I think this is partially on Venmo for their inadequate warning and poor web design.
I will not use Venmo in the future. When the opportunity arises, I will urge others to avoid this product.
On 5/25, I finished paying for a Vacation Package to Cancun, Mexico. When I got there, none of my services were actually booked. No driver from airport, no VIP passes to the event, no hotel, and no excursions. I was going on a group and someone else was coordinating so I didn’t think to ask for receipts for each item. During that time I was getting feedback from the fake vendor asking for additional money for different things that went along with what we all were supposed to be doing. Thee other people were aquatint’s I knew from previous job, I did know the vendor personally so there was a level of trust. But, once I got to Mexico and had to pay 5x the amount due to last minute hotel, and door prices for all my events I reached out to Venmo to at least dispute what I paid the other vendor through their mobile app. They quickly put in disputes for each payment, and I ended up getting every dime back. It was a constellation prize, but I’m happy I didn’t just lose $1100 to a person who was pretending to be a travel agent. Definitely, kept me updated throughout the process and the refund was automatically put into my account! Definitely feel a lot safer using Venmo for other services since they require proof that products and services were actually provided.
I recently tried to use venmo again after a year or two. My previous issues with venmo were they 1. Never let me use instant transfer even though its supported by my bank and then you don’t get any communication on what you need to do with your account. Like they wanted me to update my id card and received 0 notifications on it, didn’t see anywhere to do it, nothing. Flash forward to using it after a long time of inactivity, still garbage. My friend was repaying me for and the amount exceeded the weekly limit of $299…. For starters that’s absolutely ridiculous especially if you use venmo for business. Now if you verify your identity i belive your sending limit increases. I had done that previously but soon after i was sent my repayment, i received 3 emails that they froze my account for violations (never stated the violation), that i needed to verify my
Identity to unfreeze my account and that the money was returned to the original party…. As angry as i already was i submitted my id once again, waited an entire week for them to tell me they permanently are banning me from venmo services….again with 0 explanation. Don’t waste your time on this, use cash app.
I had a deposit of 2k into my venmo acct but the person who sent sent it to my old acct. I can log into my old account but don’t have same number or email anymore. So I’ve been calling venmo constantly and emailing after I sent my ID, and did everything I was told in order to transfer my money from my old acct to the one I always use. Note- I was on phone with rep doing everything she said when my acct froze. She said she would escalate and I would hear back in 24-48 hrs. 3 days later was told 5-6 business days, 5 days later I was told 6-7 business days. Here it is day 9 and I have emailed several times with no response, called and gotten hung up on, even spoke to a supervisor who said she would escalate and send an email to this “dept” and they would email me back BY THE END OF THAT SAME DAY. She blatantly just told me what I wanted to hear. Never heard back. It’s day 9 and I have filed a report with BBB. Do NOT use this SHADY COMPANY! They are refusing me access to MY 2k!!! And both Accts have same info same banking, and still nothing. WORST COMPANY IVE EVER DEALT WITH!
My friend had her account frozen with no explanation of why. There was money in the account when it was frozen so we called support. They told us that they can’t tell us why and that they would need to look into it for 6-7 business days. On the 7th business day, they emailed her and said that they need another 6-7 business days and they would need some documentation. In their email, they did not tell her what additional information they needed so she emailed and immediately called. After a long hold, we were able to talk to someone for a few minutes. They put us on hold for a couple minutes, then they disconnected the line.
Venmo STILL has her money.
This app is the absolute worst. I have made $400 and had it sent to the Venmo app. I tried to use my money and pay other people when it told me that I have to verify my identity. I did the whole process and the app even told me that my identity had been verified. I talked to customer support who have still not come up with a solution. They rarely ever respond, and when they do, it’s just to say that this is a rare issue and that I need to wait while the tech team tries to fix it. This has been going on for well over a month now. As soon as my account is unlocked I am taking all of my money out of this horrible app and never using it again.
i have had a frozen account for 73 days now because of a wrongful dispute against me. myself and the other person who claimed the dispute understood that she made the mistake when she had lost her debit card. she had cleared everything up with her bank on her end but venmo can not give me any feed back or instruction to unfreeze my account. im beside myself on how they manage to run this business. im so furious as this creates a problem in my business. i will be canceling this service and if someone contemplates downloading the app i will strongly advise otherwise.
I’ve done everything you guys asked to be able to delete my account and you said that a specialist will reach out to me within 24 hours to complete the request. I still cannot close it and you guys won’t either when I call. Now you say I have to wait 6-7 days. I got fraud on the account and made a dispute and everything has been closed but still, my account it there and it’s “frozen.” Customer service isn’t helpful with my request. I do not feel safe with the account not closed because I had fraud happen to me. I’m extremely upset.
Charged for a order I never even purchased through stockX. Disputed the charge but was denied. Said they contacted the vendor which isn’t even possible since stockx doesn’t even have a email or phone number for their customer service. So apparently Venmo was able to get all of my “purchase history” through a live bot lol. I have 2 purchases in my history, neither are for the purchase I disputed. So either stockX or Venmo is making false claims on my invalid purchase, which is illegal. Good work.
I sent money to my manager using an email address, however it was not the one he used for Venmo. Now it’s gone from my account and the recipient cannot get to it. My renters are paying me with insurance to avoid this potential problem which costs me $25 per month. I will cancel my Venmo app and ONLY use Zelle. It’s instant without fees or a holding company like PayPal which I’ve never had luck with either.
