Before we deal with Dropbox virality, we have to learn about Dropbox is. Dropbox is a file hosting service that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, and both personal and client software. As of right now, Dropbox is valued at 10 billion dollars, and has over 200 million users. Not bad for a startup founded in 2007.

So, how’d they do it? Was it the cool name, the ballin logo or the great product? I’m sure those played a role. But it’s quite clear that Dropbox rise to the top was spurred by its use of viral techniques

dropbox virality How?

The good people over at Dropbox understood the importance of word-of mouth and incentive sharing. Two of the first things you learn in virality 101. Dropbox implemented sharing incentives in order to grow their user base.

By referring other people to Dropbox, you would receive free additional storage space. That’s a pretty sweet deal am I right? So enterprise people young and old started sharing Dropbox with one another and gaining benefits from it. You know who else was benefiting? I’ll give you two clues, it starts with a D and ends with an X.

With all the sharing going on Dropbox was exposed to potential users, and as the sharing increased, Dropbox began to generate positive word-mouth. Dropboxs went viral.

With that in mind, I’m going to relay 5 other ways, that Dropbox used to rise to the top.

1. Using Video Explanations

Dropbox incorporated an easy how to video, which explained what Dropbox is. Plus at the end of the video you could sign up, just like that.

2. Simple Signup Process

Dropbox is famous for it’s easy signup process. We live in an age where the people value “short and sweet” rather than long winded (this is the Vine generation folks). With a short signup process users, get set up and acclimated to service much quicker.

3. Virality Tactics

The most important technique in your virality arsenal is incentive sharing. But you already know that, cause you made it this far into my blog.

4. Social Media

Dropbox utilized social media in a incentive driven way as well. Whereas most apps ask you to like their page on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter; Dropbox gave incentives to do so. Connecting with Dropbox on Facebook would give you an increase in MB; same with a follow on Twitter. People love incentives to do stuff, so give it to them!

5. Homepage that is centralized around Signing Up

When you go to the Dropbox website, you are first tempted to watch the video and then you are directed to sign up. The entire homepage is signup driven. That’s the goal right, to get people to signup for your program, why not make your homepage dedicated to that task.

Well there you have it folks some cool information on Dropbox and the moves they made that drove them to success.
