The App Store created 164 new million-dollar publishers in 2018, twice that of Google Play



The App Store has historically led Google Play in terms of developers’ ability to monetize their apps, including consumer spending on in-app purchases and subscriptions.
Today, a new report found that the App Store produced more million-dollar apps in 2018 than Google Play. Nearly twice as many, in fact.

New Instagram creator accounts enable follower tracking for audience insights


Instagram could be launching a feature that lets creators track followers and unfollowers, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. The Facebook-owned photo app previously did not allow users to track such analytics, but things could be about to change if a current testing round is successful.

Digital advertisers in China are set to boost their mobile ad spend in 2019


Digital marketers in China are planning to boost their mobile ad spend in 2019, according to new datafrom marketing tech company AdMaster.

Indeed, 79% of surveyed advertisers said they would increase their digital marketing spend at an average 20%, which represents a 2% increase over 2018.

China’s WeChat is the latest to get Snap-like ‘Stories’

WeChat, the Chinese messaging giant with more than 1 billion monthly active users around the world, just added a Snap-like ephemeral video feature as part of its biggest overhaul since 2014.

Global app install ad expenditure to grow 65% until 2020


Worldwide app install advertising expenditure is predicted to jump 65% between 2018 to 2020 to reach $64.1 billion according to new research from AppsFlyer. In other words, app install ad spend is growing an average 34% per year, slowing down over time.

App downloads across iOS & Google Play up 10% to 113B in 2018, consumer spend tops $76B



The app economy is continuing to grow, both in terms of app downloads and consumer spending. According to preliminary year-end data,  the number of global app downloads in 2018 will surpass 113 billion, up 10 percent from last year. Consumer spending in apps has grown even quicker — it’s up 20 percent year-over-year, to surpass $76 billion worldwide.

Snapchat takes on TikTok with launch of Lens Challenges

Snapchat is looking to increase user engagement with the app with the launch of a new feature called Lens Challenges. Users can opt to participate in the challenges by creating a snap with a Lens that’s themed to a particular song, dance, holiday, event and more, the company explains.

Kahoot, a ‘Netflix for education’, launches an accelerator to tap gaming and education startups

On the back of Disney increasing its shareholding in Oslo-based Kahoot to four percent last week, Kahoottoday announced a new initiative that helps to position the popular startup — which already has 60 million games and has seen over 1 billion players engage on its platform over the last year — as the “Netflix for education apps.”
