Today, we are very happy to share another success story from one of our awesome customers. Abdulmecid Dündar is the co-founder of Genetic Studios, a game company in Istanbul.
In this post, he will share some of his experience with game development and App Store Optimization. You will also learn the process that he and his team used to get over 1 million downloads, with ASO alone.
How did you get started with games and game development?
I was a big gamer and I enjoy playing popular online games. One day, I decided that I wanted to start making the games, instead of just playing them.
So I put together a team to start making games. We work really well together and we are continually learning and having fun the process.
What are some of the achievements that you are most proud of?
We have had success raising money on Kickstarter, so we have been invited to speak at a conference that Intel is putting on in Paris. As an indie developer, it is a great honor to be invited to a conference like this.
What are the biggest challenges that you had overcome in starting a studio?
Funding has been the biggest problem. We didn’t have any resources to start with, so we had to hustle and learn things as quickly as we could. This allowed us to grow faster than we though possible.
Which Genetic Studios game is your favorite and why?
The Fear is my favorite game because people come up to me and say that the game totally freaked them out. I’ve heard of people actually dropping their phone while they were playing because the were so scared.
Some of my friends couldn’t finish the game because it was too scary. So if you are going to play this game, be sure that you are sitting down…so your phone doesn’t have too far to fall.

How does your team use Mobile Action?
Two of us use Mobile Action together. I analyze and collect data and my teammate implements what I find. This works really well for us and allows us to get a lot of work done quickly.
How many total downloads would you say you have generated with ASO alone?
I’m not sure how people survive without ASO 🙂
We have been able to generate around 1 million downloads, just from App Store Optimization.
What is the biggest monthly improvement in downloads of a single app, that you have seen with ASO alone?
Our biggest monthly increase was 34,000 downloads for one of our games. This increase was only due to ASO.
How often do you update your keywords?
I try to update keywords monthly. We track our keyword rankings and if an app is not ranking well for a keyword, we change it out for another one.
I also keep a list of keywords ready for each game, so I always have new keywords to test.
What advice would have for people who are struggling with ASO?
You need to look at the bigger picture, if you want to be successful with ASO. Look for larger themes or not-so-obvious demographics of people who would search for your app.
App publishers can get too focused on their category. When you do that, there is too much competition.
If you take some time to look at the bigger picture, this can have huge rewards.
What are some of your goals for next year?
My goal is to continue making games that people love to play.
